Book club 2: The body keeps the score by Bessel van der Kolk

Book club 2

Hi MUC Bookworms,

Join us for a group conversation about the book Cracking the Armour: Power, Pain and the Lives of Men by Michael Kaufman. We want to learn what lessons and questions you took from the book, and make the solitary process of reading a bit more social! The underlying goal is to construct masculinity together to fit our needs and understandings.

You will be expected to have read the book, but no other knowledge or expertise is necessary to take part in the conversation! If you have not read the book, feel free to join, but please leave space for in depth discussion and consciously step back when necessary.
Who is this for? Men, including cis and trans men, and folks of other genders who identify along the male or masculine spectrum are welcome to attend. We value gender self-determination as a fundamental right, so if you see yourself even partly represented in this description, join us!

The conversation will be lead by Dan

Introduction of The body keeps the score:
“The effects of trauma can be devastating for sufferers, their families and future generations. Here one of the world’s experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for treatment, moving away from standard talking and drug therapies and towards an alternative approach that heals mind, brain and body.”

Accessibility information:
Physical: The bookclub location is changed to Zoom.

Sensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English, there will be no use of powerpoint or screen presentations.
Mental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book, incl topics like (sexual) violence, suicide, trauma, self-harm. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out.

If one needs to take a break and do self care, this is encouraged.
Gender: The perspective is masculine centered, to analyze masculine experiences as a form of introspection and participation.
