Why tai chi?
Tai chi, like yoga, is a movement based meditative practice which, over time invites us to step inside our bodies, and to gradually become more aware of the sensations that arise from our emotions, our reactions, our insecurities, and our fears. Through practice, tai chi helps develop greater mental clarity, concentration, and self-awareness.
What is tai chi?
Tai chi is a martial art originating from China which is usually done slowly, with careful attention to alignment, breathing, and control as we shift our weight from one leg to the other. Over time, this develops the foundation for proper movement.
Why now?
We’re approaching the holidays, and the pandemic is forcing us indoors and away from our loved ones, so it’s perhaps a good time to keep moving and have a bit of exercize. Tai chi is a great way to check in with our bodies and our feelings.
The tai chi paradox
The paradox of tai chi is that mastery of the art requires a letting go of one’s idea of self. Legendary tai chi masters were known not for their ability to wield violence, but in their ability to diffuse it, and their unwillingness to resort to such means. Avoiding violence was seen as true mastery. Master Yoda, a character developed by George Lucas, was inspired by the tai chi masters of Wudang temple in China. The path tai chi lays out for each of us is one of self-discovery, of abandoning the notion of competition, and of investigating that which can be gained by quieting the mind. Believe me when I say that this is both more challenging and rewarding than it sounds!
