SUMMARY:Workshop: Because I said so\, critique and defensiveness
DESCRIPTION:A workshop by Masculinity: under construction\, on working with feelings of insecurity\, and receiving feedback gracefully. The workshop will be facilitated by Jan and Angus. \nWe are often not aware of how our actions impact others\, but we need that information to grow. How can we open ourselves up to this information\, and handle the insecurity and vulnerability that we may feel? \nTo improve the MUC workshops\, members of our accountability committee will have access to a sound recording\, and provide feedback to facilitators. This feedback will focus strictly on how facilitators performed\, the aim is to address bias and hold facilitators accountable. \nThe workshop is free\, but donations for Shanghai Restaurant are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Fatherhood with Mike Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:Mike Reynolds will have a conversation with us and you about fatherhood. As a father in this world\, you have to make many choices on how to raise your kids\, but what are the right choices and how do we make them? Also\, through the lens of fatherhood\, masculinity suddenly looks a bit different. It is fruitful to discuss issues like mental health and body image through this perspective of fatherhood. \nMike Reynolds is the creator of Everyday Girl Dad\, a social community and website that looks to empower fathers and men in positive discussions around feminism and masculinity. As a writer and a speaker\, Mike tells stories behind the relationships between dads and daughters\, exploring how that bond is instrumental in helping both parent and child understand the impact they have on making change in the world. He wants dads to be reassured it’s okay to cry\, to express emotion\, and to build relationships through conversation. Mike lives in Ottawa with his partner and two daughters and can be easily spotted in a crowd thanks to his penchant for feminist t-shirts and tattoos of his daughters’ artwork. \nThis workshop is free\, but reserving your spot is encouraged: jan@masculinity.info. The workshop is for male-identified folks. \nShanghai restaurant is accessible\, through a side door. There is no accessible washroom.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Emotional Communication
DESCRIPTION:Communication is at the heart of relationships; without healthy communication it is hard to develop empathy\, trust or to support the other. As male-identified folks\, communicating about our or other’s emotions may be even harder\, because it requires being “vulnerable” and “soft”\, qualities that our society does not always encourage in men. \nWhy is it important for you to talk about emotions? What are your challenges and barriers in talking about emotions\, or listening to other folks’ emotions? \nThis is an interactive workshop\, where the participants are encouraged to identify their questions\, and bring their own experiences and wisdom to the group. The facilitators will tie the conversation together and keep it on track\, and will offer some suggestions for tools\, tips and tricks. \nAccessibility: This space is fully accessible

SUMMARY:Handling Disclosures of Sexual Abuse: A Workshop for Male Allies
DESCRIPTION:If a friend\, colleague or family member came to you and disclosed that they had been sexually assaulted\, would you know what to do? \nDo you believe in gender equality\, but aren’t sure if you would call yourself a feminist?\n———————————————————————————-\nIf these are questions that you’re interested in exploring\, our next Masculinity: Under Construction (MUC) meeting is for you! Join us as we welcome our first guest speaker\, Amina Doreh\, Amina is the Public Education/Media Coordinator at the Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) of Ottawa. As a collective member of SASC for 4 years\, Amina’s expertise is feminist-based peer support (crisis line\, individual/group support) to women-identified people who are survivors of sexual violence. \nAmina will speak about how to overcome resistance to feminism and how to handle disclosures of sexual assault. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period followed by a discussion. \nAs with other meetings of MUC\, this meeting is open to all men and people who identify with a masculine identity. There is no cost to attend\, though donations will be solicited to cover costs. \nThe organisers would like to thank Amina and SASC Ottawa (sascottawa.com) as well as Kind Space (kindspace.ca)\, for providing the workshop space. Kind Space is fully accessible.\nHope to see many of you there!\n———————————————————————————-\nMasculinity: Under Construction (https://www.facebook.com/groups/165991080728432/) is a local\, grassroots\, volunteer-run group for male-identifying folks to get together and discuss topics related to masculinity. The aim is to challenge ourselves\, review our privilege\, formulate a positive form of masculinity\, build community and work towards change for ourselves and others. \nWe plan to have this volunteer work be grounded in feminist theory and practice. We will be checking in with online resources and real life folks about how to not perpetuate toxic masculinity ourselves. Even when we are trying to do good we need to keep ourselves in check and be accountable to our communities. \nWe meet once per month\, or depending on the group’s needs. The format of events are semi-guided discussions. We’ll get a chance to share our experiences and questions and solutions in a safe space\, where we will promote open conversation and learning. The goal is to push ourselves and each other to learn\, and this can be an uncomfortable experience. However\, any hate speech such as racism\, sexism\, transphobia\, classism\, and ableism will not be permitted. This is not a men’s rights group.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Bystander Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Masculinity: Under Construction’s next workshop will focus on bystander intervention. In general\, along with all the upcoming Halloween festivities we believe its more important than ever to utilize our privileges to support folks who may be getting unwanted attention.\nIn this workshop we’ll discuss safe\, informed\, sensitive\, creative and direct ways to create more options for those who appear to be experiencing gender based violence. \nKey takeaways are for improving understanding and acting on it are to:\nDiscover- “Hey\, is everything okay here?”\nDirect-say it’s not okay\nDistract- “Do you have the time?”\nDelegate-ask for help\nDelay-check in after \nWe would love to find a physically accessible venue because unfortunately this venue is up a flight of stairs. If its good weather\, we could be outside in the park out front if folks want. Please advise if you know of a free/cheap venue with gender neutral bathrooms and physically accessible\, and all around a friendly neighbourhood spot. So far this is a free event in a free venue run entirely by volunteers and our capacity is very limited. We welcome your suggestions and promise to work towards the ideal space where all male identifying folks feel open to a challenging/important conversations. \nMore details TBA\nThanks!!!\n—\nGeneral vision statement from the organizers:\nThis space is for male-identifying folks to get together and discuss masculinity. SUMMARY:Workshop: Call out and accountability
DESCRIPTION:Many people and men are afraid of being called out as a sexual assault or harassment perpetrator. It has become unclear which behavior is socially acceptable as attitudes are changing fast\, and the consequences of being called out seem severe. The question that is most asked by men is: “what about due process?” \nAt this event we will discuss about why a victim decides to call some behavior out. When we better understand the circumstances of a callout\, we can think about what it means to be accountable\, and develop tools that will make a callout unnecessary in our personal relations. \nIf you have suggestions\, remarks or contributions\, feel free to post or message!
