SUMMARY:Book Club: The skin we're in\, by Desmond Cole
DESCRIPTION:Hi MUC Bookworms\, \nJoin us for a group conversation about the book The skin we’re in by Desmond Cole. We want to learn what lessons and questions you took from the book\, and make the solitary process of reading a bit more social! The underlying goal is to construct masculinity together to fit our needs and understandings.\nYou will be expected to have read the book\, but no other knowledge or expertise is necessary to take part in the conversation! If you have not read the book\, feel free to join\, but please leave space for in depth discussion and consciously step back when necessary. \nWho is this for? These book clubs are open for everyone\, join us! \nThe conversation will be both in person and online. We will meet at the Atelier d’innovation sociale (95 Clegg St\, Ottawa)\, but we will have the option for folks to join digitally as well. Please register for the facebook event to receive the link. There is a max amount of people who can join in person\, so let us know if you want to join in person! \nIntroduction of The skin we’re in by Desmond Cole:\n“The Skin We’re In describes the struggle against racism in Canada during the year 2017\, chronicling Cole’s role as an anti-racist activist and the impact of systemic racism in Canadian society. Among the events it discusses are the aftermath of the assault of Dafonte Miller in late 2016 and Canada 150. The work argues that Canada is not immune to the anti-Black racism that characterizes American society.” (from Wikipedia) \nAccessibility information:\nSensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English\, there will be a screen for the online participants. \nMental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book\, incl topics like racism\, misogyny and violence. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out. If one needs to take a break and do self care\, this is encouraged. \nThe perspective is masculine centered\, to analyze masculine experiences as a form of introspection and participation. The discussion will also take place from a perspective of critical self reflection and increase of understanding by white folks.

SUMMARY:3 week intro to Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Why tai chi?\nTai chi\, like yoga\, is a movement based meditative practice which\, over time invites us to step inside our bodies\, and to gradually become more aware of the sensations that arise from our emotions\, our reactions\, our insecurities\, and our fears. Through practice\, tai chi helps develop greater mental clarity\, concentration\, and self-awareness. \nWhat is tai chi?\nTai chi is a martial art originating from China which is usually done slowly\, with careful attention to alignment\, breathing\, and control as we shift our weight from one leg to the other. Over time\, this develops the foundation for proper movement. \nWhy now?\nWe’re approaching the holidays\, and the pandemic is forcing us indoors and away from our loved ones\, so it’s perhaps a good time to keep moving and have a bit of exercize. Tai chi is a great way to check in with our bodies and our feelings. \nThe tai chi paradox\nThe paradox of tai chi is that mastery of the art requires a letting go of one’s idea of self. Legendary tai chi masters were known not for their ability to wield violence\, but in their ability to diffuse it\, and their unwillingness to resort to such means. Avoiding violence was seen as true mastery. Master Yoda\, a character developed by George Lucas\, was inspired by the tai chi masters of Wudang temple in China. The path tai chi lays out for each of us is one of self-discovery\, of abandoning the notion of competition\, and of investigating that which can be gained by quieting the mind. Believe me when I say that this is both more challenging and rewarding than it sounds! \nThe offering\nThis event is hosted by Masculinity: Under Construction\, but is open to everyone and will not center on masculinities. \nMeet us on zoom for a 3 week introduction. Spots are limited to 10 participants. If this is something you’d like to try out\, fill out this registration form. \nWednesdays December 2\, 9\, 16\nAt the end of the 3 week session\, participants will be asked to make a donation based on what they feel the teachings were worth for them. No amount is too small. All of the funds will be directed towards the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Our First Time Sex Stories
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nSex is an important part of life for many folks. Yet\, we generally don’t talk about it. This is especially the case when it comes to our very first time having sex. That is unfortunate because this silence increases shame and ignorance and takes away opportunities for support and learning. We hope that talking openly and thoughtfully about sex can allow us to move our experiences from shame to pleasure! \nApproach:\nWith a small group (max. 5 participants + 2 facilitators) we will talk about and reflect on how our personal first sexual experience happened. We also want to explore how ideas of masculinity shape our experiences. This is a conversation\, facilitated by Alan and Jan. \nConfidentiality:\nParticipants are welcome to share as much as they feel comfortable sharing. As these conversations will be very personal\, participants are not allowed to share the stories of other participants beyond the immediate workshop. \nFacilitators:\nAlan is wrapping up his PhD in sociology\, where he researched how folks with intellectual disabilities have and experience sex. He has had many conversations with people about sex and sexuality\, and looks forward to hearing and learning from you folks!\nJan has a background in healthy relationships\, and will do his best to shift his perspective from health to pleasure! \nAccessibility:\nThe workshop will now be on Zoom\, due to the COVID developments. The conversations will be in English\, about sex\, and may discuss violence. Participants will be asked and given space to monitor their own well-being during the conversation. \nLooking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Workshop: Accountability and friendship
DESCRIPTION:What do you do when you learn that a friend of yours sexually assaulted or harassed someone? How can you know whether he really did harm? What can we do to avoid this from happening again? \nParticipants: This will be a workshop for MUC members only. Participants are expected to bring questions\, experiences\, curiosity and the understanding that we need to contribute to keeping people safe. \nGoal: The conversation will be started with the presumption that it is important to hold our friends accountable\, but also the understanding that this can be difficult and complicated. We will aim to learn together. Probably we will not be able to formulate definitive answers\, and this could just be the start of a longer conversation. \nOur perspective is shaped by our lived experiences\, and we will be a bunch of guys\, which means that it is likely that some perspectives will be missing from our conversation. Kira-Lynn Ferderber will support us\, with providing an introduction about what is at stake for those who are harmed. During the workshop\, the facilitator will also collect questions about those stakes\, and Kira-Lynn has volunteered to answer those questions from her own experiences and expertise afterwards. These answers will be distributed in the MUC facebook group a week after the workshop. We aim to respect experiences other than our own too\, as we are but one piece of this complicated puzzle. \nKira-Lynn is an educator with years of experience working for a range of awesome organizations in Ottawa\, Canada and the US. Although she recently migrated to Florida\, she is still very active and embedded in the Ottawa community. She is also a rapper\, published in MacLean’s and many other places\, and an experienced speaker. Seriously\, I feel lucky that she is supporting us! \nLocation: The meeting will probably take place both online and in someone’s garden. More information will follow.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Trans Identities Under Construction
DESCRIPTION:Trans Identities Under Construction: a discussion about how trans identities are constructed and how we can develop solidarity \nThere is a lot of talk about trans folks\, and everyone seems to have opinions on the topic. Having those strong opinions can stop us from understanding other perspectives or wanting to learn more when we are unable to discuss where they come from\, why we hold on to them\, and what their impacts are on trans and non-trans people. There is not a lot of opportunity to be authentically curious and engage in discussion without being put down. Most folks given a platform to teach about trans realities have not experienced what it means to be trans themselves (incl most facilitators of Masculinity: under construction). \nThat is why I am so excited that Joël is willing to share his knowledge and facilitate this workshop. He hopes to bring into this conversation three sources of knowledge: theoretical knowledge\, community knowledge\, service provider knowledge\, and knowledge from lived experience. He will facilitate from a place of compassion\, the idea that allyship is inherently imperfect\, and belief that all attendees fundamentally want to Do Good. \nJoin us with the goal of increasing your understanding and growing\, and to ask the questions you were unable to ask in other settings. \nWho is this for? Men\, including cis and trans men\, and folks of other genders who identify along the male or masculine spectrum are welcome to attend. We value gender self-determination as a fundamental right\, so if you see yourself even partly represented in this description\, join us! \nA bit about Joël:\nJoël is a thirty-something francofun white gay guy who’s been working in sexual health and queer/trans community since 2008. He is currently finishing his MA in Social Work at the Université du Québec en Outaouais\, using participatory community-based research to look into how guys negotiate sex ethically. He collaborated on the second edition of PRIMED: A Sex Guide for Trans Guys Into Guys in 2015. He has facilitated countless workshops\, panels and presentations on queer and trans well-being in university\, community\, government\, and business settings\, sometimes in hostile environments. He works hard to show love to his trans body. \nAccessibility information:\nPhysical: The workshop will take place on Zoom\, which does not require participants to subscribe. The link will be shared one day before the event. \nSensory/cognitive: The workshop will be in oral English\, supported by slides available in PDF format (screen-reader friendly) after the event\, or one week prior upon request. \nMental: This workshop will discuss stigma and mental health as these topics are related to the subject matter. No graphic description of violence or transphobia. This (digital) space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out. \nFor further questions on accessibility\, please contact Jan: Jan@masculinity.info.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Respectability Politics
DESCRIPTION:We listen to folks who “earned” our respect\, determined by rules that favor specific people. ‘These rules marginalize other folks\, such as black live matter activists\, indigenous land protectors\, etc\, and set us up to ignore their important messages and knowledge. \nIn other words\, this workshop is about a specific mechanism of power\, how we are all caught up in this mechanism in our day-to-day practices\, what kinds of effects this has on oppressed folks\, and how this influences our relationships and worldview. We will discuss loads of practical examples and get more down to earth\, including examples that happened in our own MUC facebook discussions. \nJoin our workshop to explore how such rules work\, why it is harmful to only listen to “respectable” folks\, and how to address this. \nThis workshop will have a semi-open structure\, where input of participants is highly appreciated\, and this input will party guide our discussion. \nThe workshop is free\, but contributions to the Atelier will be welcomed. \nThe workshop will be facilitated by Jan and Angus. \nThe workshop will take place at our new location in the Social Atelier! This place is fully accessible\, please let us know if you have specific questions. \nThe workshop will be recorded\, for accountability purposes. The recordings will be used for accountability purposes only\, and distribution will only happen selectively\, with permission of those recorded. If you have any questions or concerns\, please feel free to ask through pm\, email\, or through the anonymous question form on our website.

SUMMARY:Book club 3: Policing Black Lives by Robyn Maynard
DESCRIPTION:Hi MUC Bookworms\, \nJoin us for a group conversation about the book Policing Black Lives by Robyn Maynard. Men\, including cis and trans men\, and folks of other genders who identify along the male or masculine spectrum are welcome to attend. We value gender self-determination as a fundamental right\, so if you see yourself even partly represented in this description\, join us! \nIntroduction of The body keeps the score:\n“Delving behind Canada’s veneer of multiculturalism and tolerance\, Policing Black Lives traces the violent realities of anti-blackness from the slave ships to prisons\, classrooms and beyond. Robyn Maynard provides readers with the first comprehensive account of over four hundred years of state-sanctioned surveillance\, criminalization and punishment of Black lives in Canada.\nWhile highlighting the ubiquity of Black resistance\, Policing Black Lives traces the still-living legacy of slavery across multiple institutions\, shedding light on the state’s role in perpetuating contemporary Black poverty and unemployment\, racial profiling\, law enforcement violence\, incarceration\, immigration detention\, deportation\, exploitative migrant labour practices\, disproportionate child removal and low graduation rates.” \nAccessibility information:\nSensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English\, there will be no use of powerpoint or screen presentations. \nMental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book\, incl topics like anti-black racism\, slavery\, (sexual) violence\, suicide\, trauma. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out. If one needs to take a break and do self care\, this is encouraged.\nThe perspective is masculine centered\, to analyze masculine experiences as a form of introspection and participation. The discussion will also take place from a perspective of critical self reflection and increase of understanding by white folks. \nFor further questions on accessibility\, please contact Jan: Jan@masculinity.info.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Because I said so\, critique and defensiveness
DESCRIPTION:A workshop by Masculinity: under construction\, on working with feelings of insecurity\, and receiving feedback gracefully. The workshop will be facilitated by Jan and Angus. \nWe are often not aware of how our actions impact others\, but we need that information to grow. How can we open ourselves up to this information\, and handle the insecurity and vulnerability that we may feel? \nTo improve the MUC workshops\, members of our accountability committee will have access to a sound recording\, and provide feedback to facilitators. This feedback will focus strictly on how facilitators performed\, the aim is to address bias and hold facilitators accountable. \nThe workshop is free\, but donations for Shanghai Restaurant are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Fatherhood with Mike Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:Mike Reynolds will have a conversation with us and you about fatherhood. As a father in this world\, you have to make many choices on how to raise your kids\, but what are the right choices and how do we make them? Also\, through the lens of fatherhood\, masculinity suddenly looks a bit different. It is fruitful to discuss issues like mental health and body image through this perspective of fatherhood. \nMike Reynolds is the creator of Everyday Girl Dad\, a social community and website that looks to empower fathers and men in positive discussions around feminism and masculinity. As a writer and a speaker\, Mike tells stories behind the relationships between dads and daughters\, exploring how that bond is instrumental in helping both parent and child understand the impact they have on making change in the world. He wants dads to be reassured it’s okay to cry\, to express emotion\, and to build relationships through conversation. Mike lives in Ottawa with his partner and two daughters and can be easily spotted in a crowd thanks to his penchant for feminist t-shirts and tattoos of his daughters’ artwork. \nThis workshop is free\, but reserving your spot is encouraged: jan@masculinity.info. The workshop is for male-identified folks. \nShanghai restaurant is accessible\, through a side door. There is no accessible washroom.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Emotional Communication
DESCRIPTION:Communication is at the heart of relationships; without healthy communication it is hard to develop empathy\, trust or to support the other. As male-identified folks\, communicating about our or other’s emotions may be even harder\, because it requires being “vulnerable” and “soft”\, qualities that our society does not always encourage in men. \nWhy is it important for you to talk about emotions? What are your challenges and barriers in talking about emotions\, or listening to other folks’ emotions? \nThis is an interactive workshop\, where the participants are encouraged to identify their questions\, and bring their own experiences and wisdom to the group. The facilitators will tie the conversation together and keep it on track\, and will offer some suggestions for tools\, tips and tricks. \nAccessibility: This space is fully accessible

SUMMARY:Handling Disclosures of Sexual Abuse: A Workshop for Male Allies
DESCRIPTION:If a friend\, colleague or family member came to you and disclosed that they had been sexually assaulted\, would you know what to do? \nDo you believe in gender equality\, but aren’t sure if you would call yourself a feminist?\n———————————————————————————-\nIf these are questions that you’re interested in exploring\, our next Masculinity: Under Construction (MUC) meeting is for you! Join us as we welcome our first guest speaker\, Amina Doreh\, Amina is the Public Education/Media Coordinator at the Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) of Ottawa. As a collective member of SASC for 4 years\, Amina’s expertise is feminist-based peer support (crisis line\, individual/group support) to women-identified people who are survivors of sexual violence. \nAmina will speak about how to overcome resistance to feminism and how to handle disclosures of sexual assault. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period followed by a discussion. \nAs with other meetings of MUC\, this meeting is open to all men and people who identify with a masculine identity. There is no cost to attend\, though donations will be solicited to cover costs. \nThe organisers would like to thank Amina and SASC Ottawa (sascottawa.com) as well as Kind Space (kindspace.ca)\, for providing the workshop space. Kind Space is fully accessible.\nHope to see many of you there!\n———————————————————————————-\nMasculinity: Under Construction (https://www.facebook.com/groups/165991080728432/) is a local\, grassroots\, volunteer-run group for male-identifying folks to get together and discuss topics related to masculinity. The aim is to challenge ourselves\, review our privilege\, formulate a positive form of masculinity\, build community and work towards change for ourselves and others. \nWe plan to have this volunteer work be grounded in feminist theory and practice. We will be checking in with online resources and real life folks about how to not perpetuate toxic masculinity ourselves. Even when we are trying to do good we need to keep ourselves in check and be accountable to our communities. \nWe meet once per month\, or depending on the group’s needs. The format of events are semi-guided discussions. We’ll get a chance to share our experiences and questions and solutions in a safe space\, where we will promote open conversation and learning. The goal is to push ourselves and each other to learn\, and this can be an uncomfortable experience. However\, any hate speech such as racism\, sexism\, transphobia\, classism\, and ableism will not be permitted. This is not a men’s rights group.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Bystander Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Masculinity: Under Construction’s next workshop will focus on bystander intervention. In general\, along with all the upcoming Halloween festivities we believe its more important than ever to utilize our privileges to support folks who may be getting unwanted attention.\nIn this workshop we’ll discuss safe\, informed\, sensitive\, creative and direct ways to create more options for those who appear to be experiencing gender based violence. \nKey takeaways are for improving understanding and acting on it are to:\nDiscover- “Hey\, is everything okay here?”\nDirect-say it’s not okay\nDistract- “Do you have the time?”\nDelegate-ask for help\nDelay-check in after \nWe would love to find a physically accessible venue because unfortunately this venue is up a flight of stairs. If its good weather\, we could be outside in the park out front if folks want. Please advise if you know of a free/cheap venue with gender neutral bathrooms and physically accessible\, and all around a friendly neighbourhood spot. So far this is a free event in a free venue run entirely by volunteers and our capacity is very limited. We welcome your suggestions and promise to work towards the ideal space where all male identifying folks feel open to a challenging/important conversations. \nMore details TBA\nThanks!!!\n—\nGeneral vision statement from the organizers:\nThis space is for male-identifying folks to get together and discuss masculinity. However\, any hate speech such as racism\, sexism\, transphobia\, classism\, and ableism will not be permitted. This is not a men’s rights group.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Call out and accountability
DESCRIPTION:Many people and men are afraid of being called out as a sexual assault or harassment perpetrator. It has become unclear which behavior is socially acceptable as attitudes are changing fast\, and the consequences of being called out seem severe. The question that is most asked by men is: “what about due process?” \nAt this event we will discuss about why a victim decides to call some behavior out. When we better understand the circumstances of a callout\, we can think about what it means to be accountable\, and develop tools that will make a callout unnecessary in our personal relations. \nIf you have suggestions\, remarks or contributions\, feel free to post or message!
