SUMMARY:Cancelled: Book club: The Origins of You
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event is canceled! Folks who registered received an email notification. \n  \nHi MUC Bookworms\, \nJoin us for a group conversation about the book The Origins of You\, by Vienna Pharaon. We want to learn what lessons and questions you took from the book\, and make the solitary process of reading a bit more social! The underlying goal is to construct masculinity together to fit our needs and understandings. \nYou will be expected to have read the book\, but no other knowledge or expertise is necessary to take part in the conversation! If you have not read the book\, feel free to join\, but please leave space for in depth discussion and consciously step back when necessary. There is also a PodCast discussion that may provide an alternative way to engage with the book: https://megaphone.link/VMP6090444168 \nWho is this for? These book clubs are open for everyone\, join us! \nThe conversation will be hybrid (both in person and online). We will meet at the Atelier d’innovation sociale (95 Clegg St\, Ottawa)\, but we will have the option for folks to join digitally as well. Please register for this event to receive the link. There is a max amount of people who can join in person\, so let us know if you want to join in person! \nIntroduction of All about love from Goodreads: \n“From licensed therapist and popular Instagram relationship expert Vienna Pharaon (@mindfulmft\, +631K followers) comes a profound guide to understanding and overcoming wounds from your Family of Origin–the foundation of how we relate to others\, ourselves\, and the world around us. \nNone of us had a perfect childhood; we are all carrying around behaviors that don’t serve us–and may in fact be hurting us. But it doesn’t have to be that way\, says licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Vienna Pharaon. Our past might create our patterns\, but we can change those patterns for the better…with the right tools. \nIn The Origins of You\, Pharaon has unlocked a healing process to help us understand our Family of Origin–the family and framework we grew up within–and examine what worked (and didn’t) in that system. Certain dysfunctions (or “wounds”) in that Family of Origin will manifest in our adult behaviors in surprising ways\, from work challenges to interpersonal struggles. But the good news: armed with the knowledge about our past\, we can actually rewire our programming to meaningfully improve our relationships and our lives in the future. \nIt doesn’t matter whether you’ve been in therapy for decades\, or whether therapy isn’t for you. It doesn’t matter if you have loads of memories from childhood\, or struggle to remember anything at all. All that matters is your willingness to look inside yourself\, and your determination to find a new way forward. Complete with guided introspection\, personal experiences\, client stories\, frameworks for having difficult conversations\, and worksheets to complement each chapter\, The Origins of You will teach you how your family can both build you up and break you down…and how you can heal yourself for good.” \nAccessibility information\nSensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English\, there will be a screen for the online participants.\nMental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book\, incl topics like domestic violence and (childhood) trauma. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out. If one needs to take a break and do self care\, this is encouraged. \nThe perspective is masculine centered\, to analyze masculine experiences as a form of introspection and participation. The discussion will also take place from a perspective of critical self reflection and increase of understanding by masculine folks.\nFor further questions on accessibility\, please contact Jan: Jan@masculinities.info.

SUMMARY:Book club: All about love\, by bell hooks
DESCRIPTION:Hi MUC Bookworms\, \nJoin us for a group conversation about the book All about love\, by bell hooks. We want to learn what lessons and questions you took from the book\, and make the solitary process of reading a bit more social! The underlying goal is to construct masculinity together to fit our needs and understandings. \n All about love\, by bell hooks\nYou will be expected to have read the book\, but no other knowledge or expertise is necessary to take part in the conversation! If you have not read the book\, feel free to join\, but please leave space for in depth discussion and consciously step back when necessary.\nWho is this for? These book clubs are open for everyone\, join us! \nThe conversation will be hybrid (both in person and online). There is a max amount of people who can join in person\, so let us know if you want to join in person! \nIntroduction of All about love from Goodreads:\n“All About Love offers radical new ways to think about love by showing its interconnectedness in our private and public lives. In eleven concise chapters\, hooks explains how our everyday notions of what it means to give and receive love often fail us\, and how these ideals are established in early childhood. She offers a rethinking of self-love (without narcissism) that will bring peace and compassion to our personal and professional lives\, and asserts the place of love to end struggles between individuals\, in communities\, and among societies. Moving from the cultural to the intimate\, hooks notes the ties between love and loss and challenges the prevailing notion that romantic love is the most important love of all. Visionary and original\, hooks shows how love heals the wounds we bear as individuals and as a nation\, for it is the cornerstone of compassion and forgiveness and holds the power to overcome shame. For readers who have found ongoing delight and wisdom in bell hooks’s life and work\, and for those who are just now discovering her\, All About Love is essential reading and a brilliant book that will change how we think about love\, our culture-and one another.” \nAccessibility information:\nSensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English\, there will be a screen for the online participants.\nMental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book\, incl topics like racism\, misogyny and violence. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out. If one needs to take a break and do self care\, this is encouraged.\nThe perspective is masculine centered\, to analyze masculine experiences as a form of introspection and participation. The discussion will also take place from a perspective of critical self reflection and increase of understanding by white folks.\nFor further questions on accessibility\, please contact Jan: Jan@masculinities.info.

SUMMARY:Boys Will Be...Themselves Film Screening (Online)\, by NextGenMen
DESCRIPTION:This event is organized by NextGenMen \nTickets are by donation! All proceeds from ticket sales go to supporting the continued work of Next Gen Men in building a future where boys & men feel less pain\, and cause less harm. \n“Boys will be boys.” \nWe’ve all heard it a thousand times. It’s been used to ignore or excuse aggressive or stereotypical behaviour from boys or men. But what are we really saying\, when we use that phrase? That boys are one way\, that they can’t grow\, that we shouldn’t expect much from them? How limiting can that be? \nWhat if boys could be so much more than what they’ve been told they could be\, or should be? \nJoin Next Gen Men for a screening of Boys Will Be…Themselves\, a new Canadian documentary created by Dylan Rhys Howard that explores the ways masculinity is evolving and changing in the 21st Century. \nAfter the screening\, stick around for small group discussions (if you’ve been to one of our Circle events\, you know we love our break-out rooms!)\, and then a Q+A with the film’s director! \nFor tickets\, go here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/boys-will-bethemselves-film-screening-online-tickets-558925129107

SUMMARY:Workshop: Confidence
DESCRIPTION:Are you a confident man? \nThis might be a complex question. In this workshop we\, together\, will analyze confidence. \nWhat is confidence? Is confidence good? Which kind of confidence is good? How much is good? When is it good? How do we build good confidence (perhaps while having had adverse experiences)? \nWe will tie these questions together with concepts like accountability\, relationships\, community\, masculinity\, fragility\, defensiveness\, trauma\, systemic oppression\, and so forth. The goal is to go beyond conceptual questions\, and together find steps forward. \nThis is an interactive workshop\, where participants bring the content. Two weeks before the start of the workshop\, participants will be asked a couple of questions on their needs\, interests and perspectives. The answers will be used to guide the conversation. \nThe workshop is for masculine identifying folks (inclusive). \nAccessibility:\nThe language is in English. Issues like trauma may be discussed. This venue is fully accessible. The event will also be hybrid – a link will be provided to participants to join online. \nThis is a learning space. Facilitators commit to challenging the use of oppressive language by participants\, and to model healthy responses when being challenged.

SUMMARY:Emotional Literacy\, by Next Gen Men
DESCRIPTION:This event is organized by Next Gen Men! \n\nNGM is super excited to welcome therapist Emma Ocean to facilitate what we hope is the first of many workshops on emotional literacy!\n\n\nWhy emotional literacy? Well\, sadly many men have not necessarily been socialized to be in touch with their emotions — either identifying them\, explaining\, or expressing them — nor in turn\, recognizing\, naming\, or holding space for the emotions of others. This can deeply impact their relationships with themselves and others and can contribute to loneliness\, isolation\, and poor mental wellness\n\n\nBut we know it’s never too late to learn these skills! And by learning and practicing these skills\, we can improve our lives and the lives of those we care about \n\n\nPlease feel free to share the workshop with others who may benefit. This workshop is aimed at men\, but all are welcome to join.\n\n\nIt is online\, Sat Feb 18 at 11am MST (9am EST). Register through EventBrite. Note: the fee is $42.87\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/next-gen-men-9459883875 \n

SUMMARY:Book club: Boundaries by Anne Katherine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next book club! We will discuss the book:\nBoundaries\, where you end and I begin\, by Anne Katherine.\n\nFrom Goodreads: “Boundaries separate us from others physically and emotionally. In fact\, they are essential for our mental and physical health as well as for developing healthy relationships. Yet every day\, people’s boundaries are violated by friends\, family\, or coworkers. Despite the importance of personal boundaries many people are unaware of how or when these very important lines are crossed.”

SUMMARY:Decolonizing M:UC
DESCRIPTION:How is being masculine influenced and shaped by colonialism? How is colonialism reinforced through certain masculinities? How does this creep in our ways of organizing?\nWhat does it mean for M:UC that we are organizing on unceded Algonquin territory? That there is a genocide happening?\n\nWe want these questions to inform how we organize M:UC\n\nPlease join us for three conversations where we explore these topics and work with us to figure out what decolonizing M:UC means.\n\nThis series is open for everyone to participate.\n\nTo ground the meetings\, participants are asked to read a few short texts. If you are not comfortable reading texts\, there will be a short (20mins) preparatory meeting.\n\nThe meetings will be both online and in person (hybrid)\, to ensure everyone can participate in their preferred manner. The in person meetings depend on the COVID developments.\n\nThe meeting is in English. A wide range of topics may be discussed\, including violence\, trauma\, histories\, and ongoing forms of oppression. Participants will be encouraged to conduct personal reflection\, and figure out how these reflections can be implemented in actions.\n\nThe goal is to develop a framework that will support M:UC in our decolonizing efforts.

SUMMARY:3 week intro to Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Why tai chi?\nTai chi\, like yoga\, is a movement based meditative practice which\, over time invites us to step inside our bodies\, and to gradually become more aware of the sensations that arise from our emotions\, our reactions\, our insecurities\, and our fears. Through practice\, tai chi helps develop greater mental clarity\, concentration\, and self-awareness. \nWhat is tai chi?\nTai chi is a martial art originating from China which is usually done slowly\, with careful attention to alignment\, breathing\, and control as we shift our weight from one leg to the other. Over time\, this develops the foundation for proper movement. \nWhy now?\nWe’re approaching the holidays\, and the pandemic is forcing us indoors and away from our loved ones\, so it’s perhaps a good time to keep moving and have a bit of exercize. Tai chi is a great way to check in with our bodies and our feelings. \nThe tai chi paradox\nThe paradox of tai chi is that mastery of the art requires a letting go of one’s idea of self. Legendary tai chi masters were known not for their ability to wield violence\, but in their ability to diffuse it\, and their unwillingness to resort to such means. Avoiding violence was seen as true mastery. Master Yoda\, a character developed by George Lucas\, was inspired by the tai chi masters of Wudang temple in China. The path tai chi lays out for each of us is one of self-discovery\, of abandoning the notion of competition\, and of investigating that which can be gained by quieting the mind. Believe me when I say that this is both more challenging and rewarding than it sounds! \nThe offering\nThis event is hosted by Masculinity: Under Construction\, but is open to everyone and will not center on masculinities. \nMeet us on zoom for a 3 week introduction. Spots are limited to 10 participants. If this is something you’d like to try out\, fill out this registration form. \nWednesdays December 2\, 9\, 16\nAt the end of the 3 week session\, participants will be asked to make a donation based on what they feel the teachings were worth for them. No amount is too small. All of the funds will be directed towards the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Our First Time Sex Stories
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nSex is an important part of life for many folks. Yet\, we generally don’t talk about it. This is especially the case when it comes to our very first time having sex. That is unfortunate because this silence increases shame and ignorance and takes away opportunities for support and learning. We hope that talking openly and thoughtfully about sex can allow us to move our experiences from shame to pleasure! \nApproach:\nWith a small group (max. 5 participants + 2 facilitators) we will talk about and reflect on how our personal first sexual experience happened. We also want to explore how ideas of masculinity shape our experiences. This is a conversation\, facilitated by Alan and Jan. \nConfidentiality:\nParticipants are welcome to share as much as they feel comfortable sharing. As these conversations will be very personal\, participants are not allowed to share the stories of other participants beyond the immediate workshop. \nFacilitators:\nAlan is wrapping up his PhD in sociology\, where he researched how folks with intellectual disabilities have and experience sex. He has had many conversations with people about sex and sexuality\, and looks forward to hearing and learning from you folks!\nJan has a background in healthy relationships\, and will do his best to shift his perspective from health to pleasure! \nAccessibility:\nThe workshop will now be on Zoom\, due to the COVID developments. The conversations will be in English\, about sex\, and may discuss violence. Participants will be asked and given space to monitor their own well-being during the conversation. \nLooking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Book club 4: Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici
DESCRIPTION:Hi MUC Bookworms\, \nJoin us for a group conversation about the book Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici. \nWho is this for? Men\, including cis and trans men\, and folks of other genders who identify along the male or masculine spectrum are welcome to attend. We value gender self-determination as a fundamental right\, so if you see yourself even partly represented in this description\, join us! \nIntroduction of Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici:\n“As part of the radical autonomist feminist Marxist tradition\,[2] the book offers a critical alternative to Marx’s theory of primitive accumulation.[1] Federici argues that the witch hunts served to restructure family relations and the role of women in order to satisfy society’s needs during the rise of capitalism” \nAccessibility information:\nSensory/cognitive: The conversation will be in oral English\, there will be no use of powerpoint or screen presentations.\nMental: This conversation will discuss the content of the book\, incl topics like misogyny and violence. No graphic descriptions. This space is okay with folks expressing non-aggressive emotional responses and the facilitator will do a check-in and check-out.
